That Damn Flu

So it turns out that nasty cold I've been battling more than a month now is actually the flu. Went to the doctor a few days ago and got several intense meds that seem to finally be doing the trick, including a very scary cough syrup that warns, "Taking more of this medication than recommended may cause serious breathing problems." So, won't bore you with more of this except to note it is why my blogs have been even more infrequent lately than usual. Should be posting a couple in the next few days and more next week--including some news on a very cool project I've been working on.

  2. Take care of yourself, mister! That's a long time to have one flu. Does sound like you're feeling better.

Of course, keep warm. Much easier there (CA) than here (IL). Get lots of fluids and (warm) fresh air. Info from the Flu Wiki:

"In fact, [fever] may serve an important purpose- most bacteria and viruses that infect humans find it hard to replicate at higher than normal human body temperatures. The main danger from fever is rapid dehydration- the human body uses twice as much water with every degree of temperature rise. Because of this, most physicians now recommend that we balance the risks and benefits of fever by only treating and attempting to reduce fevers greater than 101 degrees F, 38.33 degrees C.

Fever can increase the need for oxygen. Oxygen requirements increase 7 percent for every 1 degree F increase in body temperature over 98.6 degrees F. For example if a fever is 103.6 degrees F (39.77 degrees C) there is a 35 percent increase in the body’s need for oxygen."

  3. Hi Scott
This post was from a long time ago, I know, but in the interests of filling in a few blanks: the reason the medication suppresses breathing is probably because opiates suppress the breathing centre in your brain (people who overdose on opiates will die because their brain basically forgets to breathe). So, your medication was probably addictive as hell, and would probably get you high as a kite as well :)
I hope that 2010 finds you in rude health, and see you in the funnybooks!
